Hey my dudes
Well with everything that is going on in the world, I thought now (almost a year after I said I would) was a good time to start my online journal. For those of you who are new to me and my brand, I’m Rachael Sarra. I know you’re all probably thinking “Fuck! I thought her name was Sarra”. Don’t worry you’re not alone. In hindsight it’s probably one of my most questionable branding choices. Sarra is my last name.
I’m a very proud mixed raced women. On my fathers side, through my Grandmother I connect back to Goreng Goreng/Taribaleng country in Bundaberg. And through my Grandfather I connect back to Italy.
On my mothers side I distantly connect back to France and Ireland.
So why do I have the dot in my logo? The ‘SAR’ is a tribute to my ancestors, those who have come before me including my own parents, my gandparents, aunties, uncles and those who have made sacrifices for me to have the right to vote, to speak, to work and to be here. The dot represents ‘place’ and the strong connection I have to our land. It also represents the present leading into the ‘RA’. Representing myself and the role I have chosen to play in continuing our journey, connection and stories of our culture through my art.
Bet you didn’t think you could fit all that into a logo. Or maybe you did if you’re a cool dude.
That’s the beauty of art and design. It can tell a story and when you combine that with culture. That’s when the real magic happens. Not to mention it’s therapeutic qualities. That’s where this brand was born. A desire to separate myself from the commercial structures. To truly express myself and my stories without guidelines that didn’t align to my own personal values. An outlet and creative journal perhaps. Then you guys started diggin what I put out so here we are. On the ride together. Through the ups and downs, the Ted Talks and the Exhibitions. We’re just getting started and can’t wait to continue this ride with you dudes. Let me know what you guys want to here about in the comments.
Love Rachael
